Wairinding Hill: Sumba's Endless Savannah
East Sumba is defined by its vast, rolling savannah landscapes that feel more like the African plains than the tropical islands of Indonesia. Wairinding Hill (locally known as Bukit Wairinding) is the most iconic expression of this landscape. As the dry season takes hold (May to October), the grass dries out and the hills turn a golden, straw-like yellow. This golden landscape, bathed in the soft light of the late afternoon, is perhaps the most iconic image of Wairinding. Both seasons offer completely different photographic experiences, and many visitors return specifically to see the hills in both states.
Photography at Wairinding Hill
Wairinding is a photographer's dream. The lack of trees means there are no distractions in the frame -- just the pure, flowing lines of the hills. The best time to visit is during the "golden hour" just before sunset. The low-angle light accentuates the contours of the hills, creating deep shadows in the valleys and brilliant highlights on the ridges.
If you are visiting in the dry season, the golden light on the yellow grass is spectacular. In the wet season, the contrast between the deep green hills and the dramatic, often stormy skies, makes for powerful, moody imagery.
Getting to Wairinding Hill
Wairinding Hill is located in East Sumba, approximately 30 kilometres from Waingapu, the main town in East Sumba. The drive takes around 45 minutes to an hour. The road is generally good, but the final access point to the best viewpoints requires careful navigation.
Because Wairinding is a vast area, it is highly recommended to hire a local guide in Waingapu who knows the best viewpoints. They can take you to spots that are not immediately obvious from the main road and ensure you are positioned perfectly for the sunset.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset is the undisputed best time to visit Wairinding. The light is softer, the colours are richer and the heat of the day has dissipated. It is also the best time to see the hills in their most dramatic state. If you are a dedicated photographer, try to arrive at least an hour before sunset to explore different viewpoints.
