Nihi Hotel Sumba: Where Luxury Meets the Wild

Nihi Hotel Sumba is not just a hotel. It has been voted the World's Best Hotel by Travel and Leisure magazine multiple times and once you arrive you understand why. Perched on a dramatic clifftop on the southwest coast of West Sumba, Nihi offers something genuinely rare in modern travel -- a luxury experience that feels completely untamed.

What Makes Nihi So Special?

Unlike the polished hotel corridors of Bali or the Maldives, Nihi sits in the middle of one of Indonesia's most remote and culturally rich islands. The resort works closely with surrounding Sumbanese villages, employing hundreds of local staff and investing in community projects across the region. Staying here means your money stays on the island.

The property spans 567 acres of clifftop jungle, rice paddies and private beach. With only 27 villas on the entire property, the sense of space and privacy is extraordinary. There are no locks on the villa doors. No televisions. No reason to be anywhere but exactly where you are.

The Villas

Each villa draws inspiration from traditional Sumbanese architecture -- high peaked thatched roofs, open-air living spaces, natural wood and stone. Ocean-facing plunge pools look out over the Indian Ocean. The sound of waves replaces any need for a sound machine.

Villas range from single bedroom retreats to expansive family compounds. All include dedicated butler service, daily spa treatments and full board dining. The Indonesian team here is among the most warm and attentive in Asia.

Occy's Left -- The Private Surf Break

Nihi sits directly in front of one of the most coveted waves in the world. Known as Occy's Left, this powerful left-hand reef break is accessible exclusively to Nihi guests, with only ten surf passes available per day. For surfers this is as close to a private wave as anywhere on earth.

Non-surfers can watch from the clifftop bar as sets roll through -- one of the most spectacular shows in nature. The surf season runs from May to October when southwest swells consistently light up the break.

Dining at Nihi

All food at Nihi comes from the resort's own organic farm or from local Sumbanese fishing communities. The farm-to-table philosophy is not a marketing concept here -- it is simply how the kitchen has always operated. Breakfast is served in your villa or at the clifftop restaurant as the sun rises over the Indian Ocean.

Signature dining experiences include beachside dinners on the sand, sunset cocktails on the clifftop deck and traditional Sumbanese cooking experiences with local village women.

The Spa at Nihi

Nihioka Spa sits within a private valley accessed by a jungle walk from the main resort. Ten open-air treatment bungalows are set beside a flowing stream surrounded by rice paddies and tropical forest. The spa program draws on traditional Sumbanese healing practices and Indonesian wellness traditions. A full day spa safari is included in every stay.
